Dash is almost 2 1/2 - and as I have mentioned before he is a crazy crazy kid. He started walking at 8 months and has been running ever since. But he still doesn't really talk. I mean he communicates and of course "talks" but most of the time it seems he is speaking Dutch and lately it sounds like he is Fred Flintstone because half the stuff he has been saying seriously sounds like "yabba dabba do".  He was evaluated for speech therapy at 20 months but didn't qualify and actually scored exceptionally high in all the sections except verbal communications. Basically everyone just tells me to wait. The doctor tells me that nothing is wrong with him. But all my friends kids are talking by that age - they are all posting cute kid sayings on Facebook. I want him to talk ... I am sick of trying to deciper what he is trying to tell me. I feel like I have learned a 2nd language because his words for most things are not anything like the actual thing. I know he will talk eventually but why isn't he talking now. If he needs therapy I really want him to start early and I don't know if his doctor will give me another referral to the Early Intervention. I don't want to be the psycho mom that thinks something is wrong with her kid when he is fine. I don't really just want to sit and wait and see if it gets better.

Maybe he is just too busy running to talk....who knows.

  1. It's so easy to say don't worry about it, but being a mom, isn't that we are suppose to do? I hope you find an answer soon. By the way love the blog! :)

  2. He'll get there. I agree with MommyJ above. It's so easy for us to say don't worry, but as moms, that's what we do. I also hope you find the answers you're looking for. It's hard not having them! Stopping by for the first time from Shell's place. Following now. :)

  3. He will get there! But, if you are concerned, they usually just suggest 6 months in between evaluations. You can always get him tested again, just to reassure yourself.

  4. Coming over from Shell's. Glad I did.
I've been in your position. My oldest rolled over at 6 weeks. He started walking, holding on, at 9 months, he started talking at 12 months. I could have a normal conversation with him at 18 months. People always thought he was older than his age because of how well he talked.
Then Andrew came along. At 7 1/2 months I would hand him to you and tell you to hold his head. Because he couldn't hold it himself. And people would look at me like I was crazy. I KNEW there was something wrong. But people kept telling me to stop comparing him to Jason. Finally I decided to do something about it. And I had him tested through First Steps. And he tested at a 4 month level. 3 1/2 months behind! He has hypotonia, which basically means his muscles aren't as strong as they should be. So he had OT and PT. At 2 1/2, he still wasn't talking. So I had him tested again. And he tested below level. So he got services. And now he's 9. And he's SO smart. And so articulate. And bright. And sharp as a tack. And funny. But at 2, he wasn't. And I trusted my instincts. He's YOUR child. There is probably nothing wrong. But if YOU think something's wrong, then push for them to test him again. Push for them to do something. NO ONE can protect and stand up for your child the way you can.
And please, keep us posted. I will be following you now to hear what happens. Good luck!
